Summer Institute
The National Writing Project at West Virginia University sponors an annual Summer Institute that unites exemplary elementary through college-level teachers from across all disciplines.
At the Summer Institute, participants can expect to * Develop new classroom writing strategies. * Read and discuss teaching practices and current research. * Develop a professional writing portfolio. * Become part of a dynamic teacher network. * Earn 3 hours of WVU English graduate credit. * Receive a $700 stipend and tuition waiver.
Teachers return from the Summer Institute prepared to take a lead in efforts to improve student achievement in their classrooms and are more aware of the connections that can help create a strong partnership among teachers. Summer Institute Fellows are also prepared to serve as consultants and coaches to their colleagues as they strive to achieve high standards in writing and learning.
Application Process
To apply, please write a leader that addresses the following points:
* Teaching/educational experience. Please include your education background, previous writing project affiliation (if applicable), subjects and grade levels taught, and dates. If you prefer, you may provide a resume.
* Experience as a writer (or non-writer). Consider aspects such as your accomplishments, fears, and experiences.
* Goals and interests. Explain why you would like to participate in the Summer Institute and what you feel you can constribute to the program. Discuss how you teach and the purpose of writing in your curriculum.
* Teaching strategy. Discuss one or two specific techniques you use(d) to foster writing in your classroom.
* Contact information. Include your name, work and home addresses, work and home phone numbers, and e-mail address.
